Police: Reports Of Armed Cat Are Unfounded

By Cuteness Team

Apparently, cats are nice these days. Even at their worst, most people wouldn't expect to see a furry little kitty perched in a tree with a sniper rifle waiting for neighborhood dogs.

Thank goodness that's not what happened here at all.

Police in Newport, Oregon shared a photo of a cat in a tree with what appears to be a long gun. It turns out, this is a bit of an optical illusion and the rifle is merely a stick and the cat is merely, well, an adorable furball.

"Reports of an armed cat this morning were unfounded," Newport Oregon Police Department posted to Facebook. "The feline was contacted by our canine and was determined to be in possession of a non-lethal branch."

The cat was given a verbal warning by the responding police dog and then criticized for wearing "poor camouflage attire," according to Newport police.

Facebook commentators were quick to chime in about the rumors of a potential four-legged gunman.

"So the kitty wasn't cited for the 18 miniature switchblades on the ends of his toes," wrote one concerned citizen.

Even the local news was quick to jump on the story.

"May KGW-TV use your photo? We feel it's important to help this wrongly accused feline clear his name."

And thank goodness for the old-school journalism of Oregon's scrappy KGW. Because it turns out, the police were just having a laugh, and the photo was merely a practical joke all along.

"We found [the photo] floating around the web, dating back to last July from a source in the UK."

A quick TinEye search reveals that the image of the kitty gunman may have its origins in a former Reddit Photoshop battle.
