Meet Taloose, The Cat Who Helped His Owner Find Sobriety

By Allegra Ringo

Cathryn, in her own words, grew up "deathly afraid of cats." So adopting a cat was never on her mind.

However, in 2010, Cathryn's friend asked her if she would be willing to take in a two-week kitten that the friend had found near her house, and Cathryn found the courage to say yes.

Cathryn had recently gotten out of rehab, and as she puts it, "had nothing else going on in [her] life." She says she had no idea what she was doing, but she decided to wing it.

Seven years later, she's so glad she did. Cathryn and Taloose, who's now fully grown and very healthy, are inseparable.

Cathryn credits Taloose with helping her maintain her sobriety. And Cathryn's life has taken some amazing turns since Taloose came into it. Cathryn finished college and moved across the country (with Taloose, of course) to begin a Ph.D. program.

"I got my cat when I was at a really awful point in my life," says Cathryn. Since then, she says she and Taloose have helped each other become happier, healthier, and stronger. They're best friends who support each other through thick and thin.

"I am so glad I took a chance on him," says Cathryn," because he really did save my life."
