Martha, a Neapolitan mastiff with droopy ears, bright red eyes, and more wrinkles than an episode of Law & Order, bested a field of 13 competitors over the weekend to claim first place at the World's Ugliest Dog Contest.
'Ugliest Dog' Winner Is Actually Adorable, But A Smelly Trait Won Her The Title
Held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, the annual two-day beauty pageant boasted a motley mix of doggos — most rescued from puppy mills and shelters — with memorable names like Brutus, Zoomer, and Icky.
Judged on both looks ~and~ personality, the contestants walked a red carpet for the opportunity to win a suite of prizes that included $1,500, a five-foot trophy, a flight to New York City for media appearances — and the prestige that comes with the coveted title.
While previous editions have been dominated by older, smaller, and hairless dogs (think Chinese cresteds and chihuahuas with shocking tufts of hair, bared teef, and penguin-like waddles), the 3-year-old Martha won judges over with her farting, flopping, and casual indifference to the event itself — she literally fell asleep on the stage.
In an interview with CNN, Martha's foster mom, Shirley Dawn Zindler, had this to say of the new champion: "She's a 125-pound, drooling, snoring, gassy, loud and silly girl."
And her beauty is matched only by her adorable clumsiness:
"She knocks over every water bucket no matter how securely attached to the fence [and] She ... makes sure all guests are suitably slimed on arrival." (LOL!)
While news of the contest was greeted on Twitter largely with enthusiasm, some pushed back — with umbrage — against the event's handle.
"Martha is stunning how h*ckin dare you. 13/10," argued WeRateDogs, a massively popular account with millions of followers.
"She ain't ugly. Just got character. 😍", noted one commenter.
"If that's ugly, I don't want to be beautiful.", added another.
