You Can Raise Money For Animal Shelters By Simply Walking Your Dog
Pet owners across the country take to the streets with their animal companion and show the rest of the world just how proud they are of their furry family member.
As Barbara Williamson of BFAS explains, the official Strut Your Mutt walk began in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1995. Since then, it's blossomed into a 14-city awareness and fundraising phenomenon.
Last year alone, there were over 15,000 participants in Strut Your Mutt events, including more than 10,000 dogs. This year, the event has already raised over $1.4 million for animal shelters to date, with lots more scheduled events on the docket to add to that already impressive number.
Pet owners can participate in various upcoming local events in participating cities, including October 7 in the D.C. area and October 14 in Houston.
The official Strut Your Mutt Day is October 28, as animal advocate and actress Amanda Seyfried explains in this video.
The one-day event will have pet owners proudly displaying their pups nationwide, while also pledging money to worthwhile animal causes.
If your city doesn't already have an official Strut Your Mutt event, you can still easily participate in the furry fundraising festivities. Williamson says any bit of organized stroll to raise awareness and funds can go a long way.
She says, "Creating your own Strut Your Mutt Day is as big as your imagination: take a hike with all your friends and their dogs; have a 'Surf’s Up' theme for a dog-centric picnic and a stroll along the beach; cruise the neighborhood with your pack; do a 'Mutt Meander' from one dog-friendly business to another along several blocks, etc. Make Strut Your Mutt Day your own: the sky’s the limit."
Of course, if you don't have time for any of that but still want to support the cause, you can simply donate to Best Friends Animal Society or visit strutyourmutt.org to find local participating animal shelters you can send your donations directly to.
All the shelters receive every dollar donated directly to them, so you can rest assured your donation is genuinely helping good people do good work for good boys and girls everywhere.
To connect with more mutt-lovers on social media or to show off your own Strut Your Mutt event, be sure and use the hashtag #StrutYourMutt.
Strut Your Mutt events are not only excellent ways to raise money for local animal shelters who are doing life-saving work. They also make great excuses to have a fun adventure day with your pet.
Williamson says that part of the joy of the event is the very fact that it's catered to your four-legged friend, "It's fun for a dog to get to go to an event with their family and tag along for an outing, but in this case, their family is taking them to an event made primarily for them — but hopefully their human will have a lot of fun, too."
Based on the happy smiling faces of both animals and humans alike, there's no doubt this is a universally enjoyable event.
