In case you didn't know, July has been declared National Pet Hydration Awareness Month. July is the hottest month of the year in many parts of the United States, so it's extra important to make sure your dogs, cats and other pets stay well-hydrated in the rising temperatures. We often hear health advice encouraging people to drink plenty of water each day (ever heard of drinking eight glasses of water daily?), but rarely do we hear this directed to our pets. Now more than ever, it's time to be aware of our pets' hydration needs.

To celebrate Pet Hydration Awareness Month, online pet products retailer, Chewy, is featuring a huge sale on pet waterers and drinking fountains, especially those for dogs and cats. Read more to see our list of favorite waterers and pet drinking fountains on sale, as well as signs of pet dehydration and tips for keeping your dogs and cats well-hydrated.

Dehydration in dogs and cats

According to PetMD, summer heat plays a role in dog and cat dehydration because sweating and panting leads to more water loss than during cooler seasons. Another factor that could contribute to dehydration is illness, especially one including fever, vomiting or diarrhea – the discomfort and fatigue your pet experiences can impact how often he takes a trip to his water bowl to drink.

Signs of dog and cat dehydration include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive panting
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lethargy/fatigue
  • Decreased skin elasticity

Tips for keeping pets hydrated

While each animal and pet has different hydration needs, in general, dogs and cats need between 0.5 and 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight, or about one cup per 10 pounds of weight, per day. Pet owners should remember that the larger your pet, the more water he'll need. Dogs also tend to drink more than cats since cats have evolved to be able to better conserve water.

Here are some tips for keeping your dog or cat well-hydrated throughout the day:

1. Offer fresh water at all times.

  • Remember that location and presentation of the water matters. Pets are more likely to drink more often from a pet fountain with running water than from a bowl with stagnant water. This also keeps the water cleaner and safer.

2. Incorporate more fresh food into their diet, as fresh food contains more natural moisture for hydration.

  • Include broths and wet dog and cat foods in your pet's diet for additional hydration beyond drinking water.

3. Offer water-based treats on hot days.

  • One idea is to dice pet-safe fruits and veggies, put them in an ice cube tray, fill it with water and freeze them, turning them into tasty frozen treats providing good hydration.

The advantage of waterers and fountains

The most important tip above is to provide fresh water at all times. Just as with humans, even pets can become ill from drinking water that has led to bacteria growth from being stagnant for too long, especially from a source with questionable water quality, such as a lake or pond. This is why a pet fountain with running water can be so beneficial: not only does the running water remain fresher through aeration, but your pets are more likely to drink more often from a fountain than from a regular water bowl.

Even if you opt for a gravity-powered waterer instead of a fountain (which requires being plugged in), waterers offer a higher capacity than water bowls and can provide plenty of water throughout the day. Just remember to wash it as often as the product guidelines recommend and to keep an eye on the water level.
