Why Thousands Of Awesome Women Will Be Dressed Like Cats This Weekend

By Renee Colvert

This Saturday, (the day after Donald Trump's inauguration) hundreds of thousands of protesters are expected to flood The National Mall for the Women's March In Washington. Many of these protesters will be wearing pink hats with cat ears inspired by the Pussyhat Project.

Now, Cuteness.com may not be your first stop for political news, in fact, it may be where you go to escape the latest political pandemonium, but stick with us. This story is about an incredible grassroots movement and a global community that is making cat hats. We'll also make sure you get to see some cats in hats by the end. Here's one now to hold you over:

Pussyhat Project was co-founded by Krista Suh and Jayna Zweiman. It is a grassroots movement that encourages people around the world to make pink "pussy hats" for those attending the Women's March. The name of the hats was derived from Donald Trump's comments in the infamous 2005 Access Hollywood tape wherein he boasted "When you're a star they let you do it. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."

Pussyhat Project asks volunteers to help knit, crochet or sew pink hats with ears using the simple patterns available on the project's website. They assure participants that the pattern is easy enough that even novices can help.

The movement is layered in its purpose. First, it is meant to create community and inclusion for people who can't be at the march in person. Second, its meant to create a strong visual statement in the form of a sea of pink hats.

The response has been overwhelming. Craft stores around the country are reporting they can't keep pink yarn on the shelves and if you search "pussyhat" on Etsy or Pinterest you'll find pages and pages of participants. Hat makers are producing dozens of handmade hats and saying that the project is helping them cope with the impending presidency.

Celebrities have hopped on board as well. Both Amy Schumer and Krystin Ritter (Jessica Jones) posted instagram photos proudly wearing their pink hats.

The march is just a few days away, but there is still time to get or make a hat if you are so inclined. Information about distributing Brick-and-Mortar Yarn Stores and other Allies are listed on the Pussyhat Project website. You can also find participants and various online distributions via social media.

Ta-dah! You did it! You made it to the end. Now, as promised, here are some adorable cats in hats.
