Homemade Natural Flea Spray for Dogs

By Carolyn Barton

Many flea medications have side effects that could harm your dog. Even flea medications that are deemed safe may cause reactions in certain animals. Natural ingredients are a safer alternative for keeping your furry friend flea free.

Citrus Sprays

  • 4 lemons
  • 6 cups water
  • Salt

Pour 6 cups of water into a pot and add four lemons cut into slices. Pour a tablespoon of salt into the mixture and bring to a boil. Allow the mix to boil for two minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat and cover. Allow it to sit for 24 hours. Once it has steeped for 24 hours, remove the lemon slices and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray on your pet daily to prevent fleas. This can be used as a rinse after bathing as well. Fleas do not like citrus smells, therefore they will avoid the pet. The spray also will condition your pet's skin to prevent irritation.

Vinegar Sprays

  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Lavender or cedar oil

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of vinegar and 1 quart of water. Add in 2 to 3 drops of lavender or cedar oil and mix well. Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar may be used, or you can use a half cup of each. Once mixed, pour into a spray bottle. Mist your pet thoroughly with this spray. It can be used to spray bedding and areas around bedding. The vinegar repels fleas, while the essential oils give the spray a pleasant aroma.
