How to Kill Fleas With Oranges

Flea medications can be costly or full of toxins. This home remedy for dogs using orange peels to make an oil is a less expensive and universal way to eliminate fleas. The citrus oil can be applied to the pet and any affected household areas. Do not use this remedy on cats, because the oil can be harmful to their skin.

Making Orange Oil

...

Gather or purchase citrus fruits. Most people who have used this remedy believe oranges work the best. You will need about five for a medium-sized dog. Peel the skins off and cut them into small pieces.

...

Put the skins in a large pot with a cup of water for every piece of fruit. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for several hours. Add more water if a lot has evaporated. To increase the oil released, pull the skins out when they are soft and grind them. Then, put the skins and the oil back into the pot. When the skins get soft and squishy, remove them from the heat.

Let the mixture cool, then strain it into a plastic container. The orange oil can be kept for about one week in the refrigerator. If frozen, the oil can be taken out and defrosted as needed.

...

Pour the mixture on your dog's fur. Be sure to rub it in everywhere, especially areas that may be difficult for your dog to reach, such as behind the ears. This may be easiest if you mix a half-ounce of oil with a half-bottle of basic human shampoo and give your dog a bath.

Use the remaining oil to treat areas of your house. Put the orange oil in a spray bottle and apply it to carpets, beds and dog toys that could have fleas. Also, put a few drops of oil on your dog's collar each day to keep fleas away.
