How to Make a Cat Hammock

By Elle Di Jensen

Kitties love lounging and hanging out and are experts at finding unconventional places to indulge in this favored pastime. You can give your favorite feline some help with finding a comfy, out-of-the-way place to nap by making her a cat hammock. Anyone who's mastered the straight stitch on a sewing machine easily can make one with a piece of polar fleece and two plastic hangers. You can mount your cat's hammock by screwing eyebolts to opposite sides of the underside of a coffee table, then slipping the hooked part of the hanger through the eyes.

Step 1

Lay the polar fleece flat on a table or countertop.

Step 2

Place a plastic hanger at each end of the fleece. Position them so that you can fold the 14-inch edges over the rods that run along the bottom of the hangers.

Step 3

Fold 3 inches of one edge of the fabric over the bottom of the hanger. Insert two or three straight pins through the fabric to hold it in place. Repeat the process with the other hanger at the other end of the hammock.

Step 4

Sew the folded pieces in place using the sewing machine. Use a straight stitch and remember to sew backward and forward on each end to lock the stitches in place so they won't come undone.

Step 5

Remove the straight pins from the hammock before hanging it.
