Pomeranians are sweet dogs that are full of personality and are eager to please. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to tell if your Pomeranian was successfully bred and is ultimately pregnant. There aren't any at-home dog pregnancy tests like there are for humans, but with the help of your veterinarian, you will be able to know if your Pomeranian is in the family way.
How to Tell If Your Pomeranian Is Pregnant?
Have an ultrasound performed on your Pomeranian. Ultrasounds are very reliable and are able to detect pregnancies relatively early, about 25 days after breeding. Ultrasounds allow the doctor to see inside the belly without being invasive, and they can detect heartbeats.
Take blood to determine if your Pomeranian is pregnant. About 20 to 30 days into the pregnancy, a dog will start to produce the hormone relaxin. Blood tests can be performed to check for this substance. If relaxin is detected in the test, your Pomeranian is indeed expecting and is about halfway through the pregnancy.
Palpate the abdomen. Veterinarians can usually detect the presence of puppies about 20 to 30 days into gestation. The doctors can feel the uterine swelling that is indicative of pregnancy.
Observe your Pomeranian. Pregnant dogs will have distended stomachs, and their nipples will start to change in size. If you notice any of these characteristics, your Pomeranian is probably pregnant.
Take radiographs of your Pomeranian's belly. This method of determining if your Pomeranian is pregnant is very accurate but cannot be performed until about 45 days into the pregnancy. After this time, puppy skeletons are dense enough to be seen on X-rays. This method will also help determine how many puppies your Pomeranian is carrying.
