Bandanas provide a fashionable accessory for your dog. Make sure it fits properly, and does not pose a choking or tripping hazard. A sailor knot keeps the bandana securely in place.
How to Tie a Bandana on a Dog
The Two-Finger Rule
A flat dog collar should be loose enough for you to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. Follow the same guideline for the bandana. Your dog should be able to move her head and breathe freely. At the same time, the bandana should not be so loose or long that your dog trips or can chew on the fabric.
The Sailor Knot
Fold the long side of the bandana once or twice to create thin ties on either end. You can also use this technique to shorten the bandana if necessary. To tie a sailor knot, grasp one tie in each hand. Cross one tie over the other. The bottom tie will always stay in one place. Pull the top tie over the bottom tie and through the center of the bandana. Pull the tie straight up and then around the back of the other tie. This creates a loop. Pull the tie through the loop. The knot should resemble a bow. Pull on the ties to tighten the knot as necessary.
