Tip

Fleas have several life stages including egg, larvae and adult.

If you can, wash the cat in soapy water. Suds drown adult fleas.

Outdoor/indoor cats can pick up a variety of bugs including fleas.

If your kitty starts scratching, break out the baking soda. The nifty white powder functions as a leavening agent in baking, but this natural product had multiple uses outside of food including getting rid of fleas on cats. Baking soda contains no harmful chemicals, and it poses no harm to children or other pets. To combat fleas successfully on a cat, use baking soda in a two-step approach: on the cat and on the rugs.

Step 1

Sprinkle baking soda liberally on the cat. Rub it into the skin. Repeat as needed. Fleas lay eggs directly on the cat.

Step 2

Combine equal parts salt and baking soda. Cover the rugs, upholstery and carpet with the mixture. If you run out while spreading the mixture around your house, mix another batch. Baking soda won't stain your carpets or upholstery.

Step 3

Vacuum the carpet, upholstery and rugs after letting the mixture set into the rugs for at least 15 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the vacuum bag or canister immediately and put it outside to avoid reinfesting the house.

Step 5

Repeat every time you vacuum for at least three months, but eggs can delay hatching for up to a year.
