With over 30,000 different species of fish out there, it seems like coming up with names just for the species would be a tricky task.

Did you know there are fish out there with names like a thicklip grey mullet or lumpsucker? So, it’s easy to imagine that giving a unique name to your little fishy-friend might be a struggle.

1. Sushi

While it may err a little on the side of problematic for obvious reasons, believe it or not, this one of the most-popular fish names out there. If you’re willing to get a few looks of disapproval from humorless friends or family for your crude sense of humor, then this is the pet name for you.

If Sushi is too aggressive for your comedic tastes, consider a less, controversial Japanese delicacy for your nautical namesake like Miso. I bet your fish is swimming around that little bowl like chunk of tofu, which makes this the perfect name.
