Our Top 10 Favorite Internet Cats

Was the internet invented by a secret society of cats intent on world domination? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it's general knowledge by now that cat videos pretty much rule the web and we are totally on board with that! It was tough picking our top 10 favorites from the long (and constantly growing) list of adorable celebrity cats out there in cyberspace, but we finally did it! Check out who we picked, and then tell us who your fave famous felines are.

10) Waffles the Scottish Fold
When you're gazing into those round saucer eyes and those adorable flattened ears, it's seriously difficult to imagine a cuter animal on the planet. Surprisingly, though, Waffle's folks say that he was unwanted as a kitten because he was "ugly." Huh? If so, it looks as if wee Waffles got his comeuppance in a big way!

9) Luna the Fashion Kitty
America's first top kitty model has arrived, and her name is Luna the Fashion Kitty. This purrty Himalayan-Persian has a wardrobe to die for and features a new outfit on her Facebook page on a daily basis. No wonder that Fab.com hired her to be a model (meow-del?) for the popular shopping website's blog. Work it, Luna!

8) Hamilton the Hipster Cat
Handsome Hamilton is a cat with a moustache. A big, white moustache that appears to be waxed and curled up at the ends like the ones worn by old-timey bartenders, that guy on the Pringles can, and irony-loving hipsters. Things really can't get much more awesome than that.

7) Shironeko (a.k.a. Basket Cat, Zen Cat, Relaxed Cat)
He's sleepy. He's smiley. He's a master at balancing stuff on his head. Shironeko (Japanese for "white cat") sleeps anywhere he pleases, though he appears partial to baskets. Looks like this moon-faced Turkish Van can give us all a well-needed lesson in Zen Meditation.

6) Grumpy Cat (real name: Tardar Sauce)
You can't have an internet cat list and not include the most meme-d cat on the planet. Yes, folks, we're talking about Grumpy Cat, the feline who gave the term "sourpuss" a whole new meaning. Though many have mistaken her for being a male, Grumpy Cat is actually a female named Tardar Sauce, and her owners probably never knew that her perma-frown would be her ticket to fame and fortune. Grumpy Cat has starred in a documentary (Lil Bub and Friendz) as well as her own movie called Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever on Lifetime Network. With so much love coming her way, you think she'd have turned that frown upside-down by now! (We kid, of course. We hear that Tardar Sauce is actually a very cuddly and content little kitty.)

5) Sockington
With 1.35 million Twitter followers (as of today), Sockington is undoubtedly one of the most famous internet felines around. And what does Sockington tweet about? Stuff that cats care about, of course, namely food (prepared and brought to him by his "food lady"), naps, litter boxes, hairballs, etc. He's also got plenty of 'tude, referring to his dad as "fatty" and his lookalike housemate Tweetie as "Sockleganger."

4) Colonel Meow
Besides being a Colonel in the cat army and an "adorable fearsome dictator" of human "slave beasts," this imposing Himalayan-Persian also held the prestigious title of Cat with the Longest Fur in the 2014 Guinness Book of World Records. Sadly, Colonel Meow and his famous scowl departed our world in January of this year to go to the great catnip meadow in the sky. Goodbye Colonel—your minions forever salute thee!

3) Maru
I don't care how many times you've watched Maru's YouTube antics, they will never, EVER get old. This cardboard-box-obsessed Scottish Fold first stole our hearts in 2008, and he quickly rose to superstardom, especially in his native Japan where Maru has successfully published two photo books, a DVD, and appears in several television commercials for various products. We wish this little furball many more happy years of leaping into tiny boxes and sliding across polished wood floors.

2) Henri Le Chat Noir
Henri, like his fellow French existentialist philosophers Camus and Sartre, asks life's big questions: What's the meaning of existence? I know that I have nine lives, but is there a tenth? Will I ever catch my tail? Henri Le Chat Noir is far and above our favorite poetry-composing and philosophy-spewing feline.

1) Lil Bub
It was a tough decision, but the incomparable Lil Bub comes in at number one (but only by a whisker!). This ridiculously adorable lil trooper was the runt of her litter and was born with several genetic mutations as well as a bone disorder called osteopetrosis. However, all of these wrongs added up to one great big right—Lil Bub's ultra-quirky, "perma-kitten" appearance. Her characteristic traits are her arresting bulbous eyes and her ever-exposed tongue, earning her legions of adoring fans. Last but not least, she's the star of a documentary film (Lil Bub and Friendz), has made several TV guest appearances, and is the subject of a biography. Most of the proceeds from her merchandise support various animal rescue groups. We love you, Lil Bub!

Honorable Mention: Cuteness Mascot, Murphy Van Der Socks
Of course we also have to give a shout out to our very own mascot, the inimitable Murphy Van Der Socks. We think he's a dapper young chap who never fails to wear two pairs of clean white socks and to keep his little grey moustache groomed on a daily basis. Murph's also the fastest cat in town, so if he's chasing after you, I'm afraid your chances of escape are close to nil!
