How To Make A Chic Cat Hammock From A Cardboard Box

Create a cozy nook for kitty with a colorful hammock they can curl up in for cat naps. It gives them a little perch, a little canopy and a little open air scenery all in one — what more could kitty want?

Things You'll Need

  • Large box
  • Box cutter
  • Painter's tape
  • Tape measure
  • 1 yard of fabric
  • Scissors
  • Non-toxic craft paint
  • Craft glue (optional)

Step 1

Tape the box closed on the top and bottom.

Step 2

Cut a large opening on all sides of the box. I left a 2-inch border around the sides of my box, but cut out the rest to maximize the "open air" feel.

Step 3

Paint the box with non-toxic craft paint. You don't technically have to paint the box, but if you want to cover up any text or logos — and if you want a cute hammock — then opt for paint.

Step 4

While the paint dries, cut out a square of fabric that measures 4 inches longer on all sides than the bottom of the box. I found this adorable cat graphic pattern at the fabric store and couldn't resist!

Step 5

Cut a 3-inch slit in all four corners of the fabric square.

Step 6

Cut slits in all corners of the box.

Step 7

Pull the fabric through the slits in the box and tie a tight double knot in each corner.

Step 8

Again, this is optional, but for some extra cuteness, hang some yarn fringe around the top of the hammock with either glue or tape.

Place it in quiet corner and watch kitty sink into the comfort of his very own hammock.
