This Golden Retriever Might Have The 'Most Luxurious Doghouse' We've Ever Seen
Usually, when you hear the expression "in the doghouse," it's a bad thing, meaning an individual is in trouble and is being punished. But when it comes to Teddy the golden retriever, being in the doghouse just might be the greatest thing ever. That's because the pampered pooch's owner, Jonathan Lower, has gone to great lengths to ensure Teddy's indoor doghouse boasts luxuries most pets — and humans! — can only dream of.

And I can already hear the comments: "He's just a dog," "the fish tank is too much," "what a waste of money." But here's the thing... I didn't build this for anyone else. I built it for Teddy. He loves watching the fish, and he deserves a space that's his...a place where he feels even more safe and loved. Teddy's been with me through some of the hardest moments of my life...losing my dad, huge life changes, and almost dying from Crohn's disease. So yeah, maybe it's "just a doghouse" to you. But to me, it's more than that. It's a thank you letter to my dog for everything he's done for me.
The story of this lucky dog's luxe dwelling starts several years ago. "Found pictures of the very first version of Teddy's doghouse in 2019. At the time, I used peel and stick stone, and battery powered lights," Lower writes on Facebook. This original doghouse garnered gushing media attention from the likes of "Forbes," "BuzzFeed," and "Newsweek," but Lower wasn't satisfied with the quality of the construction. He explains in a TikTok video that's been viewed more than 3.6 million times that his father, who intended to help Lower and teach him construction techniques, passed away from cancer, so Lower had to muddle through as best he could.
Eventually, Lower decided it was time to rebuild the doghouse properly. In a series of videos on TikTok, he documents the process of tearing apart the old doghouse and rebuilding it, inside and out, while his three canine "supervisors" watch the whole process with varying degrees of interest.
A luxurious doghouse as a sign of love
Seeing Teddy's new doghouse is like watching an episode of the old TV show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," if there had been a canine edition. Described in the TikTok video as "the world's most luxurious doghouse," Teddy's new pad has enviable features such as a big television, a fireplace, a virtual window, and a slide-out dog bed operated by a joystick. It even has its own fish tank. Every last detail has been carefully thought out, from the personalized welcome mat to the artwork showing a golden retriever as royalty to the sign reading "A spoiled golden retriever lives here."
In the caption for the video, Lower acknowledges that some people will criticize the whole endeavor as too much for "just" a dog. But Lower defends his over-the-top construction as an act of love. "I didn't build this for anyone else. I built it for Teddy," he writes. "He loves watching the fish, and he deserves a space that's his...a place where he feels even more safe and loved. Teddy's been with me through some of the hardest moments of my life...losing my dad, huge life changes, and almost dying from Crohn's disease." Lower ends by writing, "It's a thank you letter to my dog for everything he's done for me."
