Great Pyrenees Goes Into 'Guard Dog' Mode To Protect His New Kitten Friend
Who amongst us hasn't felt the urge to snuggle with and protect a tiny kitten? In a TikTok video that's been viewed more than 9.7 million times, a great Pyrenees seems to take the self-appointed role of kitten cuddler and guard dog very seriously, despite the fact that Mom has captioned the video, "POV you say you aren't keeping any kittens but the guard dog has other plans." In the video, Mom lifts the pup's ear, and a little gray-and-white kitten's head pops out. The dog then gives Mom the biggest side-eye imaginable.

"Ohhhh the pyr side eye. I'm afraid you're keeping the kitten," one viewer wrote. Another joked, "He looks like it took him all night to put that baby down just for you to wake 'em up." Several people mentioned how cozy and contented the kitten seemed, tucked snugly into the dog's long fur. One commented, "Oh to be a kitten with no bills or responsibilities and wrapped up by a warm fluffy protector."

As the name suggests, the great Pyrenees was originally bred in the Pyrenees Mountains of France and Spain. These strong, fast dogs herded livestock and protected smaller animals from predators, and their thick white fur kept them warm in the cold weather and blended in well with the snowy landscape. Their double coat does a good job of keeping them warm in frigid temperatures, but all that thick fur makes the great Pyrenees one of the worst dogs for allergy sufferers.
Frequently described as majestic, these large dogs can tip the scales at 85 pounds for a female and 100 pounds for a male. Despite their massive size, they're so calm and gentle that they make excellent household pets. They're considered one of the low-energy dog breeds, but they spring into action quickly whenever they perceive danger or a threat to their pack. One of the viewers of the TikTok video wrote, "My neighbor's Pyr would steal baby bunnies out of their nest to guard them from the hawks and eagles. He took his 'job' seriously. I'm sure mama bunny wasn't pleased especially when he took them all inside." Another added, "Pyrenees have a totally different level of nurturing, 'this is my pack now, we protect the pack.'"
It certainly seems that this particular great Pyrenees has decided that this specific kitten is a member of the pack — no matter what Mom says about it. Luckily, a later TikTok video revealed that one of the kittens was here to stay.
