Golden Retriever Is 'The Best Part Of NYC Marathons' Because Of One Hype-Man Habit

Most people who sign up for a road race expect to receive a commemorative T-shirt and perhaps a banana and an electrolyte drink for their efforts, but the racers in a half-marathon in New York City got something extra: furry high-fives from a happy golden retriever. In a TikTok video that's been viewed more than 2.4 million times, @ellici.a shared the sweet sight, which she described as "the best part of NYC marathons."

Viewers of the video described the dog as a great cheerleader, morale booster, and "certified good boy, unlicensed coach." Several said that seeing this delighted-looking doggo would have given them the motivation to keep running the race even after hitting the proverbial wall.

One person joked, "Why exactly was a golden retriever chosen for this mission? Was there some sort of qualification test? Asking for the Schnauzer community." Another wrote, "I'm not a runner by any means, I barely manage to go up the stairs, but I'd do it just for his fat paw.😭"

The popularity of golden retrievers

Rare is the person who can resist the allure of a cheerful golden retriever. It's no coincidence that happy-go-lucky goldens are often portrayed in pop culture, such as Buddy the basketball-playing dog in "Air Bud" and Dug the talking dog in "Up." They're one of the most beloved dog breeds in America — number three on the popularity list, right behind French bulldogs and Labrador retrievers, according to the American Kennel Club.

Goldens are considered one of the best temperament dog breeds, and they're so loyal and loving that owners sometimes affectionately refer to them as "Velcro dogs." These versatile pooches make excellent family pets, and they also do well as service, therapy, or search-and-rescue dogs, thanks to their intelligence and energy. They're eager to please, making most goldens relatively easy to train — including giving high-fives at marathons.
