Golden Retriever Tries To Play With New Puppy But She Isn't Having Any Of It

Sometimes, a dog and a new puppy are instant BFFs, while other times, the friendship takes a bit more time to develop. In a funny TikTok video set to the "Mission: Impossible" theme music and captioned "When mom and dad get the puppy a new puppy," a large golden retriever tries repeatedly to get a small golden retriever puppy to play, but the puppy just sits there, frozen.

More than 1.3 million people have watched the video, and many of them tried to channel the big dog's thoughts. "How do I turn this thing on???" wrote one, while another suggested, "She booping her for a heartbeat." Some viewers imagined what the small puppy might be thinking. "She'll mistake me for a statue if I stay frozen," one commented. Another said, "Maybe if I stay completely still, she won't see me." One person joked, "When a drill sergeant gets in your face, and they try to make you break rank!"

At the end of the video, the big golden gives up and turns away, looking disappointed. That's when the little puppy jumps up and bounds past, and the big dog joyfully joins in. One viewer cheekily suggested the next logical step for the pair's owners: "Now the puppy's puppy needs a puppy 🥰."

What are the signs that a dog wants to play?

One viewer of the TikTok video noted how the big golden retriever clearly shows that its intentions toward the little puppy are playful, not harmful: "Very playful energy with the play bows, the mid tail wag, the jumping. A little lack of personal space and a few jabs, but otherwise went well." Luckily, these two did eventually make friends, as featured in a later TikTok video.

When dogs drop to the ground when they see other dogs, this play-bow action of lowering the front end while raising the back end is a clear invitation to play. The play-bow action may be accompanied by friendly play-growling and lead to play-fighting. Other indications of a playful pupper include bouncy movements, a relaxed body, a wagging tail, excited barks, and short, playful sneezes. There may also be some shaking and butt sniffing. All clear signals to other dogs, but nothing humans should try with other humans!
