Saint Bernard Puppy Is Totally In Her Element Frolicking In The Snow

Some dogs love snow so flipping much, but you can't always tell what pup might totally fall in love. That's why it's always a special treat when you can capture your dog's very first foray into that wintry mix. Thank goodness that's the case for one Saint Bernard puppy in a super sweet TikTok. Now we all get to witness one very cute (and giant) pup discovering what it's like to bask in her element as many times as we like; and with over 170,000 views, it looks like others thought the same!

Primrose the Saint Bernard may not have known she'd see snow when her dog parent let her out of the SUV in this nighttime clip, but it only took her a few short moments to discover she absolutely loves it. Well, that is, right after she tasted the snow, as one commenter pointed out. Then, she immediately frolicked in the yard. Another viewer mused, "She's in her element," and we absolutely agree!

How Saint Bernards were made for the snow

Primrose quickly fell in love with snow at first sight, almost like she was made for it. There are, in fact, dog breeds that thrive in cold weather. So, is it possible there are also dogs, like Primrose, who are made for the snow?

Fascinatingly, the Saint Bernard's icy history seems to support this idea. In 1050, a snowy pathway in the Swiss Alps towards Rome was named after a monk, Saint Bernard of Menthon, who helped travelers over the pass. In the 1600s, Saint Bernards were bred to help with rescue missions along this often dangerous route. These large canines' keen sense of smell in snowy climates, paired with their intelligence and gentle nature, made them quite helpful in the search and rescue of on-foot travelers.

Saint Bernards can get up to 30 inches tall and weigh 180 pounds; and all that mass can help them to stay warm in winter time! Plus, they have a pretty thick double coat. As far as dog breeds go — based on their history and physique — it's safe to say if anyone was made for snow, it's these guys! No wonder Primrose loves it so much. Now, let's hope she didn't jump right into someone's lap later with her giant, snowy paws. See: things you'll understand if you have a big dog.
