Man's Reaction To 'Dream Dog' After Losing His Senior Pet Will Make You Tear Up

Conventional wisdom says never to give a puppy as a gift. After all, it's difficult to know if the recipient is ready to adopt a dog and sign on for a commitment of 10 or more years. When Aubrey of Grand Rapids, Michigan, decided to give her stepdad, John, a golden retriever puppy for Christmas, she knew for certain that he wanted a golden after losing his elderly Shih Tzu. "This time he wanted a golden retriever. He said he's wanted one since he was a little kid, so we planned the surprise for about three weeks," Aubrey told Newsweek. A TikTok video that's been viewed over 1.6 million times captured the heartwarming moment when John meets his new BFF, a sweet little pupper named Jack.

Written across the video is the explanation, "We told my stepdad that we were going to look at a skid-steer, little did he know, he was getting his dream dog." (A skid-steer is a piece of machinery commonly known by the brand name Bobcat.) One viewer of the TikTok video commented, "Aw, cutest skid steer ever!"

"He's just cuddled up in his arms like that's home now 😭😭😭," one person wrote. Another asked, "Did anyone else's video start to get blurry about 5 seconds in? 😭" That viewer wasn't the only one getting teary-eyed — in the video, John chokes up as soon as he realizes the puppy is his family's early Christmas present to him.

Jack's owner is in for some new grooming routines

At the reception of getting little Jack, several people mentioned the need to vacuum every day — sometimes twice a day — to adequately deal with "golden glitter" or "canine confetti." Anyone who's ever owned a golden retriever knows that their beautiful long fur winds up absolutely everywhere. "Just the other day my husband asked why there was dog hair in the fridge. The dogs are gated off from the kitchen 😂😂😂😂," one person commented on the TikTok video, while another confessed, "During my downtime at work I pull hairs from my clothing lol." The suggestion to buy a Roomba robot vacuum came up repeatedly. One person wrote, tongue planted firmly in cheek, that goldens "only shed twice in a year... once for 6 months in the spring and once for 6 months in the winter."

If you're trying to keep up with the output from your own canine shedding machine, know that there are ways to minimize dog shedding, such as by brushing them regularly. This regular brushing can also help you save money on dog grooming later, when it's time to take your pooch to the pros.

One viewer wrote poignantly, "You learn to love the shedding fur and when they're gone, you'll find the last remaining. Maybe in a closet, maybe on a coat or in a pocket. But I will guarantee you that when you do, the pain of losing them will flood right back. The memory of holding and cuddling them too. All of those times you cursed that fur. Then you will cry!"
