Rescue Dog Snuggling With Dad's Shirt While He's Gone Is Impossible Not To Love

Sometimes, the love between a canine and a human is apparent to everyone who sees the pair. That's definitely the case with Cactus and his owner, Michael Henry. Cactus was part of a litter of puppies abandoned in California's Mojave Desert, and he ended up with Pups Without Borders. Henry fostered Cactus and became so smitten with the adorable doggo that he couldn't bear the thought of Cactus going home with anyone else. The pampered pooch now lives a joyful life with Henry in Miami, and their TikTok account is filled with charming videos of Cactus.

Heading out of town for a wedding and leaving Cactus one of my worn shirts Dogs feel calmer when they can smell you, your scent is familiar, safe, and comforting, especially when their favorite human is away. A well-loved shirt can help ease separation stress and make the house feel a little less empty. Miss you already, buddy. Keep my spot warm.

One video — which has been viewed more than 1.1 million times and liked over 149,000 times — shows a particularly heartwarming moment, as Henry places one of his worn shirts into Cactus's bed before traveling to a wedding. Cactus immediately rubs his face in the shirt, and he eventually drifts off to sleep wrapped in Henry's clothing, a look of contentment on his furry face. The video's caption reads, in part: "Dogs feel calmer when they can smell you, your scent is familiar, safe, and comforting, especially when their favorite human is away. A well-loved shirt can help ease separation stress and make the house feel a little less empty."

Viewers were utterly enchanted with Cactus, calling him "beautiful angel," "a little love bug," and "the sweetest boi." One wrote, "The way he immediately snuggles into it...that's emotional support human in shirt form," while another joked, "It's his now. It's the law."

The importance of scent to a dog

The canine sense of smell is legendary, used to sniff out everything from criminals to cancers. Your dog can smell when you're stressed out, and some talented pooches can even sniff out whale poop floating in the ocean from more than a mile away (scientists study the poop to learn valuable information about the whales). Dogs sniff crotches and buttocks in particular because of the pheromones released by these areas. Armpits also release pheromones, making the smell of a worn T-shirt especially interesting and appealing to a dog.

One netizen commented on the TikTok video, "Last time I left my dog a shirt he peed on it," to which another person responded, "That's actually him relieving anxiety in the safest place possible. You're his safe space." A dog might pee on your clothes to mark territory, relieve stress and anxiety, or comfort itself by mixing its scent with your scent. One viewer shared, "My dog has never rolled in anything disgusting, amazingly enough, but he will pull the bathroom towels off of their hooks and roll in them 😂 Hooman smell is the best smell 😂😂." Cactus the rescue dog would certainly agree.
