Clever Husky Escapes From Home And Heads To Doggy Daycare All By Herself

Many pet parents share the ever-relatable fear of our pups running away. Searching for a lost pet can be anxiety-inducing, and the last thing we want is a remake of the 90s Disney lost-pet adventure film "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey." That's exactly why one determined Husky's story is so amazing. In a now viral TikTok, a clever Missy treks all the way to her daycare from home in an adorably impressive canine feat you have to see to believe.

When Heath Hrappstead kept his 5-year-old Husky at home from dog day care for the day in order to have her attend an afternoon vet appointment, Missy made other plans. She dug her way out of the backyard and took herself to Spot's Place in Regina to visit her boyfriend Shaggy instead. #husky #dogsoftiktok #daycare #sask #moment

Missy was supposed to be waiting at home for a vet appointment on what started out as a "very normal Monday." But unbeknownst to her human, Heath, this husky had other plans. While he was away at work, Missy dug her way out under the muddy back gate of their home and proceeded to walk herself on what was typically her and Heath's bike path to her daycare, called Spot's Place (she'd memorized the route!).

Mackenzie, an employee who was the first to spot a very dirty Missy when she showed up at the door, said, "We're very happy that she made it safely and chose to be in our care." After everything was squared away with Heath, Missy got to have a mini spa day and spend the rest of her time canoodling with her daycare boyfriend, Shaggy! Honestly, getting out of a vet appointment and spending the day with your favorite guy sounds like a win to us!

How do lost dogs find their way home?

It's true, Missy safely making her way to daycare is the best-case scenario. But what about those pups that escape without a clear destination? How on earth do they find their way back?

Many of us can attest to meeting our "soul pets" and developing a new worst nightmare: losing them. You may have heard tales of dogs who escaped from their backyard, later returning months — and even years — later as if they never left. It's a real phenomenon, and there's actually a science to it. In a three-year-long experiment, Czech University of Life Science researchers found that while dogs, of course, use their wonderful sense of smell to retrace their path, they also do something else pretty interesting.

Get this: Some canines are able to use the magnetic field that surrounds the Earth as a guide. Basically, it's like our fur babies have an internal GPS, which is both fascinating and also requires more research to truly understand how they're able to do it. For now, this seemingly sci-fi bit of knowledge may give pet parents peace of mind, though microchipping and putting a collar with your contact information on it is still your best bet if your pet is lost (your vet can help you check if your pet is already microchipped, if you're unsure).
