Swimming Feline's Pond Adventure Makes Her A True 'Submarine Cat'

It's been said that cats aren't the biggest fans of water, and that goes for wild and domestic felines alike. So, if you've ever wondered if all cats really do hate water, you're not alone, but that's exactly why one TikTok making waves might give you "paws." Yep, this video features one very impressive "submarine cat" swimming in a pond, and she seems to be having a blast.

Azia's big splash has been viewed over 500,000 times and counting, and it makes sense! This feline's swimming skills are quite the spectacle. Once she leaps into the water, Azia swims quite smoothly through a shallow pond, all the way to a gathering of boulders to shake off. Even sweeter, her cat dad cheers her on the entire time.

"Otter mode activated," said one impressed viewer, likely alluding to Azia's aquatic expertise. Others admired her eagerness, noting that their cats would never be as excited to swim. One even said their "life would be complete" if they got to see a cat swimming in person.

Do cats actually like to swim?

Azia's impressive little swim is nothing short of a sight for many of us who haven't witnessed cats in water. But is the one commenter on the TikTok right that "most cats avoid water but are brilliant swimmers?" Or could your kitty love water, after all, and you just don't know it? Well, the answer is a bit more complex than you might think.

First off, the belief that most cats dislike water is not unfounded. Cat experts often suggest that domestic cats' evolution in dry climates has made these animals unfamiliar, and therefore a bit wary, of bodies of water. So though cats possess an innate ability to swim, it's not strange for them to avoid, say, a bath, like the plague.

Still, there are actually several cat breeds known for enjoying a good swim! For example, there's the Turkish Van, aka "the swimming cat," that is an energetic feline that loves the water. Then there's the Maine Coon, Sphynx (hairless cat), and Siamese, to name a few more swimming feline breeds. Just remember, while certain cat breeds share characteristics, each cat has its own personality. That means that you'll just have to get to know your feline friend to find out if they love a good swim, like Azia.
