Pit Bull Mix Gets A New Dachshund Sister And Things Don't Go As Expected

Often, when a pet owner brings home a second dog, the not-so-secret hope is for the two animals to become instant BFFs and amuse each other, joyfully romping and playing together. Sometimes, reality can be a whole different experience.

In an amusing TikTok video that's been viewed more than 56,000 times, Rhubarb the pit bull mix seems a bit blah, so Rhubarb's owner adopted Plum the dachshund as a companion. "Getting a second dog thinking they'd keep each other entertained," is written across the start of the video, followed by, "now I just have two dogs staring at me all day." Indeed, the video shows Rhubarb and Plum quietly staring at their owner from the floor, the couch, and the bed.

"Well staring alone isn't as fun," noted one viewer, and another commented, "Lmaoooo, two times the neediness." One netizen described the intense canine stares as "double the judgement." But, as one person pointed out, "They are sooo freakn cute 🥺🥰🥰." Fortunately, this story has a happy ending: Later videos show the pooch pals cuddling, snoozing together, and grooming each other.

Bringing home a second dog

If seeing Rhubarb and Plum together has you thinking about whether the pet-owning life might be easier with a second dog, first consider your dog's age, temperament, personality type, and energy level. Is your dog easygoing or high-strung? Gregarious or shy? Confident or fearful? Younger dogs usually adapt better to change than older animals, and certain breeds tend to do better in multi-pet households, including golden retrievers, Australian shepherds, corgis, beagles, and poodles. While pondering whether your dog needs a companion, also take into consideration how much time, money, and physical space you have for a second pet.

One viewer of the TikTok video shared a heartwarming anecdote about bringing more pets into the home, writing, "Idk my second and third dog we got at once and it made my old lady dog a puppy again it was amazing to watch 😭 She is their momma now and struggles to keep up but she tries her best for them."
