Confused German Shepherd Sees Ice For The First Time & Her Reaction Is Hilarious

The German shepherd is the very epitome of a brave dog, ready and willing to protect an owner, apprehend a criminal, sniff out a bomb, and locate earthquake survivors. But GSDs also get nervous on occasion, especially when encountering something for the first time. Take, for instance, a German shepherd named Echo.

In an endearing TikTok video that's been viewed more than 3.3 million times and garnered over 379,000 likes, Echo is running along the beach when she stops suddenly and stares fixedly at the ocean. Her owner assumes that Echo must be noticing a hurt animal or perhaps a fish in the water. "I'm so lost, but she's onto something and I trust her instincts," her owner explains in text overlaid on the video. The GSD cautiously enters the water to explore further. When a large piece of floating ice bumps into Echo, the dog leaps in the air, startled. It's then that her owner realizes it's the first time her pet has ever encountered huge ice chunks floating in the ocean.

Viewers were utterly charmed by Echo and her monumental discovery. "We just witnessed a dog learning water is both a solid and a liquid," observed one. Channeling Echo's thoughts, one netizen wrote, "Mother!!! The water!!! It is also ground?!" and another commented, "Something touched me.. SOMETHING TOUCHED ME!!! 😂😂"

The intelligence and inquisitiveness of German shepherds

German shepherds are regarded as one of the smartest dog breeds in the world and one of the most emotionally intelligent dog breeds for a close bond, plus they're one of the most loyal dog breeds. However, that doesn't stop these big, strong, intelligent, inquisitive dogs from also being absolute goofballs at times. Many viewers of the TikTok video relayed goofy stories about their own darling dogs.

"GSD can be so derpy, mine was raising hell the other day when we were at the lake walking. When I got to her to see what she was barking at, it was [a] black plastic bag stuck in the grass 🤷🏼‍♂️😂😂😂😂😂," one person shared, and another wrote, "My German shepherd was barking at the lamppost across the street... that has been there the whole time..." One netizen neatly summed up the two dominant personality traits of German shepherds: "Every GSD I've had has been the bravest scaredy cat ever! Fantastic pups."
