Neighbor Dogs Figure Out How To Knock On Doors — And Their Next Move Is Brilliant

Befriending your neighbors may seem like a tradition of days past, but it seems some friendly dogs are determined to keep the ritual alive. When couple Thai and Nicole first moved in to their new home, their neighbor's pup, Pita, couldn't help but welcome the family into the neighborhood by showing up on their doorstep. Clearly, she is the kind of dog that loves to say hello and make new friends. "We let her in. She met our dog Fia, and they became instant friends," Nicole shared with The Dodo. Yet after initial the introductions were made, Pita took another bold step. In the following days, she began regularly knocking on Fia's front door — just like a human.

Over time, Pita grew comfortable in her neighbor's house, cavorting with Fia and even checking out their treat drawer. Yet before long, the two began expanding their social circle to other pups in the area. "[sic] Pita taught those dogs how to trigger our doorbell and knock as well," said Nicole. Now, her house has become the host spot for canine block parties. Another positive result? It's also helped more humans in the area meet each other. In other words, Pita's friendly spirit turned the neighborhood into a community. "Those dogs have a better social life than me," one YouTube commenter joked.

A dog's world usually revolves around their humans, but as Pita and Fia have shown us, pet friendships are just as beautiful. Though not everyone is lucky enough to have their dog get along so well with their neighbor, there are ways to help your pup meet and bond with other dogs. Some trainers even recommend setting up dog dates to help your pup find new playmates. You can search for nearby dog owners on apps like Nextdoor, or try to make friends with people you meet on walks.

However, keep in mind that nobody can force two dogs to get along. However, you can try to guide their interaction to be more positive. For example, don't push the relationship if the pups look bored or are whining. Healthy canine play should involve plenty of breaks. It's okay to stop the date completely if a dog grows uncomfortable. Also, don't leave food lying around unattended during the first meeting. The first dog to spot the treat might claim it and begin resource guarding. With some time and patience, the two dogs may just become best friends like Pita and Fia!
