Woman Makes Mini Dachshund DIY Halloween Costume From Old T-Shirt & He Instantly Turns Into A Model
Dachshunds are a beloved breed. They were even on the American Kennel Club's top five most popular pooches list in 2025. However, they also have a bit of a reputation for being pretty darn stubborn. So when you discover something a dachshund actually likes, it's worth noting! One mini dachshund mom did just that in a YouTube video where her wiener pup gave his DIY Halloween costume a very cute stamp of approval.
Mac's a mini dachshund in Dublin, Ireland, with a pretty keen eye for spooky fashions. Or at least that's what this little guy's frequent inspections of his mom's homemade Halloween costume implies. Mac thoroughly sniffs the black fabric before his mom crafts what will soon be a cape out of Mac's dad's old T-shirt. Then, he scratches at cardboard his mom will use to structure the collar of said cape.
Mac's an active participant throughout the whole process, including when he poses in his new cape like a macabre model. His glowing review makes this quite a masterclass in how to introduce a dog to a Halloween costume. Looking good, Mac!
How to know what your dog is thinking
With his game of fetch, Mac makes his approval of his DIY Halloween costume quite clear. But what should you do if your dog's response to a costume, a command, or any interaction isn't so clear? First off, be sure to avoid anthropomorphizing. That's when human motivations are projected onto animals, despite dogs thinking and behaving quite differently than us.
Instead, pay close attention to your dog's body language to better understand them. A relaxed dog likely appears at ease, with a soft gaze, an open and relaxed mouth, and maybe even a wagging tail. It will play freely, like Mac and his game of fetch. A stressed dog, though, appears much more tense. For example, instead of comfortably playing fetch in his costume, a disgruntled Mac might have tucked his tail, stayed quite still, or even yawned — a gesture some dogs make to calm themselves in stressful situations.
If you're still unsure how your fido might be feeling, it may be useful to check in with a dog behaviorist or trainer to help you learn some communication techniques. Or, you might take a more unconventional approach. Pet psychics might not be what you'd expect, but they may offer a comforting and empathetic space for you and your dog to bond and better understand each other.
