Top 10 Adventures of Wishbone the Dog

Every child of the '90s was obsessed with Wishbone — the classic-lit-loving Jack Russell on PBS who was constantly dreaming himself into works of great fiction, often playing the title/starring role in an A+ costume. So join us on a trip down Nostalgia Lane as we count off our Top 10 adventures of our favorite bookish pup!

...

1. Pride and Prejudice (Furst Impressions)

...

Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in the BBC Pride and Prejudice is all fine and good, but OMIGOD YOU GUYS, Wishbone as Darcy in a PBS-d up Pride and Prej? Someone get us a fainting couch and some smelling salts stat! It’s so cute, we’re losing consciousness.

2. Romeo and Juliet (Oh Rosie-oh, Oh Rosie-oh!)

...

Oh man, Wishbone played all the classic romantic leads to paw-fection. In this ep, his infatuation with shelter dog Rosie led him to cast himself and his crush as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers.

3. Sherlock Holmes (The Slobbery Hound and A Dogged Exposé)

...

Wishbone made two appearances as Sherlock in The Slobbery Hound, a take on The Hound of the Baskervilles, and A Dogged Exposé, because apparently it was too hard to find a dog pun for A Scandal in Bohemia. It totally makes sense that Wishbone played Sherlock twice, as the super-smart and just-a-smidge-bit-snarky pup was perfect for the role of the iconic know-it-all sleuth.

4. The Odyssey (Homer, Sweet Homer)

...

Over the course of the two seasons, Wishbone had some great getups, giving us all the #DogHalloweenCostumeGoals. But, did his threads ever get better than the Trojan War pup-sized armor he wore to play resourceful Odysseus, stormer of cities?

5. Robin Hood (Paw Prints of Thieves)

...

The action sequences in this ep were to die for. Plus Wishbone slinging a bow and arrow without the use of opposable thumbs? Little Jack Russell, you’re an inspiration to us all.

6. The Prince and the Pauper (The Prince and the Pooch)

...

Obviously the only thing better than one Wishbone is TWIN WISHBONES. We do think they missed a pretty obvious dog pun here in the title, like how is this ep NOT called “The Prince and the Paw-per?” But whatever, it’s fine — Wishbone is #twinning! Let’s just be grateful this episode happened at all.

7. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (The Hunchdog of Notre Dame)

...

Wishbone as Quasimodo? We’re ded. DED.

8. Don Quixote (The Impawssible Dream)

...

Wishbone didn’t always play the title character of the book he was riffing on. In the case of Don Quixote, the pup played Quixote’s faithful squire Sancho Panza, which made all the sense in the world, because who better to play a loyal character than a DOG? We 100% approve of this type-casting.

9. The Time Machine (Bark to the Future)

...

Wishbone time-traveled in his imagination looking badass in a bowtie in this H.G.Wells-inspired ep.

10. Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West

...

It was pretty unclear what, if any, work of classic literature Wishbone’s Wild West TV movie was based on (Lonesome Dove? Mayyyybe?). But also, who cares — because Wishbone rode a horse. We’re good here, guys.
