This Dog Waited 900 Days In A Shelter Only For Something Sadder To Happen

In a perfect world, every dog would have a loving home, and none would ever feel unwanted. Unfortunately, many pets in the real world end up in shelters for one reason or another, and some stay there for years before being adopted, if they get adopted at all. This was the case for Sora, a Labrador-pit bull mix who spent more than 900 days at a no-kill shelter in Fresno, California, before someone finally brought her home. She likely had high hopes for the future, but the very next day, something tragic happened: her adopter returned her.

Sora was initially surrendered to the Valley Animal Center by her first owner approximately two-and-half years before the brief adoption, only to be rejected once again. A shelter employee told Newsweek that the family didn't give her "enough time to decompress in her new home." Many shelter dogs need months to fully adjust to a new environment. Based on the shelter employees' description of Sora's personality, it's likely that the family found her too energetic for their liking.

While she should have been playing fetch and cuddling with her new humans, Sora had to endure watching people walk past her kennel day after day. The experience took an emotional toll on the precious pup and the staff; shelter surrender is worse for dogs than many people realize. Her heartbreaking story went viral, which dramatically increased the interest of prospective adopters. Less than two months later, a light appeared at the end of the long tunnel.

The shelter received calls from all over the world from people wanting to help. They sent donations, fetch toys for dogs, and other items. Sora eventually saw her 1,000th day at the Valley Animal Shelter, making her the shelter's longest resident, before she got her next break; someone agreed to adopt her. However, there was one problem: the distance. The adopter lived in Texas and wasn't initially sure if she could drive to California to get her or if Sora would be flown to her. 

On April 17, 2024, the shelter shared an exciting update on Instagram. A few staff members agreed to drive Sora to New Mexico, the halfway point, to meet her new human who would then drive her to her forever home in the Lone Star State. With the donations, the staff members bought Sora a new leash, harness, plenty of toys, and other items for her life as a Texan.

After a long road trip, Sora arrived safely at the meetup spot and met her adopter for the first time. The shelter described it as "a perfect match" in a Facebook post about the pup. In the most recent update from June 2025, her adopter shared a TikTok showing Sora sunbathing near a garden, so it's safe to assume she's still loving life in a loving home, enjoying belly rubs, and running around her spacious backyard with her shelter days forever behind her.
