Dog Gets Adopted From Shelter After 549 Days And It's A Match Made In Heaven

Some dogs spend only a couple of days in shelters while they await adoption, but others spend months — or even years — for one reason or another. Sadly, one of the factors that shelter dogs who take the longest to adopt tend to have in common is their large size. This was likely one of the reasons it took so long for a dog named Boomer to find a home. He spent over a year at the Humane Society of Richland County in Ohio. In addition to his size, the shelter placed an adoption recommendation on him: female-only households. But despite the restriction, he found the perfect home.

The couple drove seven hours from Illinois with their female dogs to meet Boomer. Then, they did it again the following weekend. The second trip confirmed that he'd be well-suited for their home and fur babies, so they drove to the shelter a third time in September 2025 to take him home. Since then, he's been loving life and being the "man" of the house. One of his humans has even created a Facebook page to share his adventures.

How Boomer's fresh start is going

Boomer has transitioned well into his new home. "It seems like he has been here forever. It's been a perfect fit for everyone involved," Amy and Gina shared in an interview with Newsweek. A few days after his arrival, he enjoyed an ice cream Pup Cup and wore his first Chicago Cubs jersey. Other Facebook pics show him sunbathing, napping on the sofa, and playing tug-of-war with his canine siblings. Despite his female preference, he's warmed up to one of the couple's sons. "[It] went much better than we anticipated," they shared in the interview, "he was a little growly and grumbling, but was amazing with him once he sat down."

He gave his family a bit of a scare in mid-October when they noticed a scratch in his ear, so they took him to the vet for treatment. Luckily, he made a full recovery and is back to goofing around with his siblings, taking over the sofa, and gobbling up treats from Grandma. Boomer's followers can't get enough of him, especially his bond with Lucky, one of the cutest French bulldogs on the internet. One fan commented on a Facebook post, "This is why Boomer waited...It took a long time but he is exactly where he is supposed to be to spread love and to get all the love and treats that he deserves. Love ya Boomer, keep enjoying life!"

Boomer has certainly become one of many newly adopted pets that make you say "awww." It may have taken a bit longer than he wanted, but if he could speak, he'd probably say his family of humans and canines was well worth the wait.
