Here's what makes an Akita so special
The Akita — a breed that originated in Japan — is known for its thick coat, fluffy curled tail, and overall powerful physique. Their coats in particular are distinct, as it is a double coat that provides weather-resistance, with the shorter outer layer giving them their puffed-up, teddy bear-like look. Weight-wise, they can range anywhere from 70 to 130 pounds, with an average height of 26 inches — a powerful dog, indeed.
Strong, one of the most loyal dog breeds, and protective, Akitas require experienced dog owners to maintain regular grooming and obedience training, especially to keep up with their unusual coat and stave off aggressiveness around other dogs and humans they could perceive as a threat. That said, for the right owner, they can make wonderful companions.
Popular Akita mix designer breeds include the shepkita (mixed with German shepherd), the Akita pit (mixed with American pit bull terrier), and the huskita (mixed with Siberian husky). All of these hybrids are equally unique and require the same astute care and training as the standard breed, as the breeds they are mixed with are uniformly strong and protective.
