This Newfoundland And Duck Have A Close Bond That You Have To See To Believe

As the age-old adage goes, opposites attract — and that saying even spills over into the animal kingdom sometimes, especially on this Oklahoma hobby farm where an unlikely duo has caught people's attention on Instagram. Meet Sven the dog and Olaf the duck, who share an unexpected pet friendship on the farm, despite the obvious difference in size and species.

Captioned "Olaf will always be there when Sven is near," and hilariously soundtracked to Shakira's hit song "Whenever, Wherever" (in which the pop star sings about unconditional love no matter the distance), the obviously enamored duck can be seen making a mad dash to its bestie and getting underfoot of the giant Newfoundland dog, who just casually steps over his feathered friend as if he has done it a million times.

"This is the sweetest thing ever," says one smitten viewer, while someone else notes that the relationship is the kind of "friendship and love we all deserve." At least one person, though, thinks the bear-like dog looks "embarrassed" by all the attention. No matter what's going on in this odd couple's heads, it's clear that there's an inseparable bond between the two that needs no explanation.

Characteristics of Newfoundland dogs

Often referred to as "gentle giants," Newfoundland dogs are known for being calm and sweet-tempered while also making good guardians. Like Sven in the Instagram video, Newfoundlands are often dispatched as watchdogs at farms and animal sanctuaries, helping protect the other critters with their imposing size and protective nature.

Considered a giant breed dog, Newfoundlands can weigh up to 150 pounds and stand over 26 inches tall, making them one of the strongest dog breeds there is. Their temperament, however, allows them to be good family dogs that get along well with children and other pets, so much so that they're sometimes referred to as "nanny dogs," a la the character Nana, who was a Newfoundland in charge of caring for the children in the original "Peter Pan" narrative by J.M. Barrie.

Newfies, as they are affectionately known, have a heavy, waterproof double coat and webbed paws that make the breed great swimmers, but special care needs to be taken with their fur because there is so much of it, and daily walks need to be made a priority to avoid obesity due to their large size. Whether or not to get them a duck companion is entirely up to the owner, though!
