Dachshund Still Hilariously Stares Down Mom For Cake Weeks After Her Birthday
If you've ever wondered whether dogs remember things, look no further for your answer than this captivating TikTok clip of a dachshund that stubbornly waits every night for a slice of birthday cake — like her owner fed her weeks before. Captioned, "My dachshund now knows that birthday cake at the dining room table is an option and she is not willing to let it go," the video is both heart-tugging and hilarious to watch as the tenacious pup stares down her human with a silent demand that they both understand.
@leahmohmea My dachshund now knows that birthday cake at the dining room table is an option and she is not willing to let it go lmao #dachshundsoftiktok #dogtok
Sweetly overlayed with the Brenton Wood song "I Want Love" (but perhaps replace "love" with "cake") and the words "What's the thing that your dog has never forgotten? I fear I may have caused ours." The video creator then goes on to explain that it has been weeks since her dog enjoyed some cake at the dining room table, but now every night the little wiener dog just stands there while, awkwardly staring.
Meanwhile, the comments section does not disappoint when it comes to viewers posting their own stories of their dog's long memory, such as this anecdote: "My dog once found a half eaten muffin on the sidewalk and would stop there every time for MONTHS, thinking muffins just sprouted out of the ground there." Another shares, "I have to yell CHEESE to get my dog to come in. His name is Leif. He likes to eat cheese." Oh, doggies, you do not disappoint either!
Is there anything your dog shouldn't eat?
Dogs are masters of begging — usually for food, but sometimes for pats. There's no doubt that their efforts often pay off, whether by way of an extra scoop of delicious dog food, a scrap of food from a plate, or just by nosing around on a walk. But that doesn't mean everything is safe for them to eat.
Obviously, most things sold at a pet store as food and treats are OK for them to consume (always read the label, though, and pay attention to your pet's specific dietary needs), but what about beyond that? Human food that's generally considered safe for pets to eat in moderation includes plain cooked chicken, boiled white rice, and certain fruits and vegetables like blueberries and carrots. However, there are many foods that are considered toxic and/or dangerous for dogs, including but not limited to: grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic; chocolate, caffeine, and products containing the sugar substitute xylitol (like some candy and gum); and home-cooked bones, raw meat, and high-fat, greasy foods. (Here is a list of foods dogs can't eat.)
It's always best to consult your vet or do some research before feeding your dog human-grade food, given that whether or not it's good for them, they very well still might eat it. One thing is for sure: dogs like food! Just ask the demanding dachshund on TikTok who will never forget the delicious taste of birthday cake that once touched her tongue.
Always consult your veterinarian before making changes to your pet's diet, exercise, or care. To find an accredited veterinarian in your area, you can search the American Animal Hospital Association's online database.
