Why are French bulldogs so popular?
In 2022, the French bulldog was declared the most popular dog breed in the United States by the American Kennel Club's ranking, based on registration data, usurping the 30-plus-year reign of the Labrador retriever with its many advantages. It took only a decade for the compact, flat-faced "Frenchie" breed to rise from the No. 14 position it held in 2012 to the top spot (where it still sits as of the 2024 list). But why the surge?
It is thought Frenchies have picked up traction in America because of their petite size, low-exercise needs, and ability to adapt to apartment living, seemingly making them easy pets to own. However, it's not just that. Their affectionate, playful nature and unique looks have also boosted their appeal to both city-dwelling singles and suburban families alike. And once a trend takes off, everyone wants to parade around town with the cutest, most coveted dog.
While they are considered low-maintenance pets to some extent, French bulldogs' flat snouts can come with significant breathing problems, especially if they are hot or over-exerted. Therefore, proper care and regular vet visits are important for the breed. Once an owner commits to their safekeeping, these dogs are known to make loving, loyal companions.
