"Oh my heart 😭," says one viewer, "because when I look at this, I see a puppy and once upon a time a little girl✨💕." Another notes, "The way he looks at her... 😭. He's so gentle and sweet ❤️." Indeed, he is, exemplifying another endearing moment courtesy of a dog.

Why Newfoundlands are often so sweet

Newfoundland dogs are known for being sweet-tempered, making them great companions that are especially good with kids despite being a strikingly large and powerful working dog breed. In fact, these gentle giants are sometimes referred to as "nanny dogs" because of their calm temperament that allows them to excel in families with children and other pets. The nickname comes from the character "Nana," a Newfoundland in charge of caring for the children in the original "Peter Pan" narrative by J.M. Barrie.

That calm, nurturing nature that makes them outstanding guardians most likely stems from their ancestry, when Newfies (as they are affectionately known) were originally bred as human helpers. They often served as loyal guardians on fishing boats and assisted with water rescues because their water-proof double coats and webbed paws make them great swimmers. There's even a tale (and most likely a myth) about a Newfoundland that helped save a lifeboat of Titanic passengers.

These days, that innate devotion and helpful personality make them great companion dogs, as shown in the heartwarming TikTok video featuring Chewy the Newfie and his human grandma. If you'd like to see more of the pair, check out Chewy in his adorable pumpkin costume.
