Golden Retriever Puppy Is A True Kissing Machine When Meeting Her 'Grandpawrents'

Puppies are the best, especially when they're just visiting. Just ask any grandparent of fur kids who gets to enjoy all the fun parts of puppyhood without the long-term commitment. Take, for example, this doting grandma, who's captured in this sweet TikTok video giving some nice, soothing belly rubs to the newest addition to the family, an adorable golden retriever puppy named Tofu, who happily repays her with lots of love and kisses.

Captioned "meeting my grandpawrents for the first time," the short, charming video features the golden's first interaction with her clearly enamored grandmother, who cradles the pooch and gives her lots of loving attention. So much, in fact, that Tofu repays her with a few face licks before looking like she's ready to drift off into a puppy nap, which we're sure grandma wouldn't mind. "Grandma energy is the ultimate," noted one viewer in the comments, and we couldn't agree more when it comes to precious pups who love their grandmas!

Why do dogs like to lick your face?

On the surface, a dog licking your face is a sign of trust, bonding, and affection. They often do it when happy or excited, which many people translate as them giving kisses in their own unique way. It's a clear sign of fondness, but why the face?

Instinctually, domesticated dogs lick their birth mothers' faces to signal they are hungry. That behavior often carries over to their human companions as they learn that attention-seeking behavior, like affectionate licking, can get them good things, including pats and treats. Dogs can also sometimes lick to relieve stress or mimic grooming behavior, and, yes, sometimes dogs just lick your face because they might think you're tasty. Salty sweat on skin or tiny leftover particles of food at the corner of your mouth can make you attractive licking territory to a pup.

No matter why your pooch is licking your face, though, it's a sure sign of love and affection, and all you have to do to reciprocate is use kind words and a couple of pats. If you want to learn about other ways dogs show affection, here are some adorable ways your dog says "I love you," along with signs your dog has truly bonded with you.
