Don't Blink Or You'll Miss How This Golden Retriever Goes From Puppy To Adult

Time flies, whether you want it to or not. The biggest way to notice the passage of time is with kids, kittens, and puppies growing up. One minute they're little and the next...they're full-grown. It all happens in the blink of an eye, it seems, as exemplified by this quick TikTok video that shows one pet owner lamenting how their pure little golden retriever pup has already turned one, and it's so relatable.

Titled "You blink & your baby isn't a baby anymore," the sweet clip starts off with a small, fluffy puppy happily snoozing while getting some belly rubs, then quickly cuts to a full-grown dog celebrating his one-year birthday. The bittersweet celebration shows the pooch named Spencer eating a pup-themed cake before posing for the camera, showing off just how much he's grown. "They grow up so fast!!" noted one commenter, while several others posted pics of their own pups turning one. Enjoy every moment, is how the saying goes.

How old is a one-year-old dog in human years?

Dogs and people age differently, although we use human-year ages to refer to our dogs' age. Generally, people assume one dog year equals seven human years. In reality, though, according to AVMA guidelines, a 1-year-old dog is equivalent to a 15-year-old teenager, as dogs mature much faster in their first year than humans do. Meaning, by the end of their first year alive, dogs have rushed through infancy and childhood and are now considered teens or young adults.

A big part of why dogs age faster than humans is that dogs don't live as long as humans, with giant breeds often only making it to 10, while smaller toy breeds can live much longer. By age two, dogs are assumed to be around 24 years old in human years, with each subsequent year of their life adding the equivalent of five human years. Of course, the exact number depends on the size and breed of a dog, but in general, just remember that by age 10, most dogs are pushing into their 60s when it comes to human-year equivalency. So, capture those puppy moments fast!
