We've all got to watch out for each other in this wild world, helping nurture and protect the ones we love — and pets are often the first to step up when someone in the family needs a little extra care. Take, for example, this loving golden retriever who just wants to cuddle and protect his little sister, staying right by her side in this precious TikTok video that may just be too cute for words.

"Always right next to her," states the sweet video of the protective pooch named Boone, who is seen lying on the floor with the little girl sitting in between his paws as she plays. It's a priceless sight, for sure, with viewers weighing in by saying, "He's the goodest boy ever! 😘" and "Two best friends for life 💖🥺." If only we could deem dogs protectors of the human race, the world just might be a better place.
Why dogs are so protective of their people
We all know the many signs that our dogs love us, including cuddling and hovering nearby. Dogs are instinctively protective, mainly because of their bond with humans. Pet dogs often view their human companions as family members that also need to be guarded, sharing a bond that has been ingrained over thousands of years of domestication due to selective breeding.
Once you are part of their "pack," dogs see mutual protection as survival; they'll keep you safe while you keep them sheltered and fed. It's that sense of loyalty and signs of bonding that make dogs so special. It often manifests as loving companionship, but sometimes results in barking, growling, or other territorial behavior when your pet perceives danger.
Early socialization and behavior training are essential to making a dog a calm, loyal companion, but a dog's breed can also play a factor, with German shepherds and Bernese mountain dogs often said to make great guard dogs, and golden retrievers and Newfoundlands widely considered to be some of the best with kids. However, any and all dogs have the potential to make perfect and loyal pets!
