What does it really mean when a dog smiles?
Some dogs really do look like they're smiling, with happy eyes, a turned-up mouth, and wiggly tail wags. But does that look really mean what we think it means?
In a nutshell, yes, when a dog looks like it's smiling, it's usually happy. Beyond that, though, the origins of a doggy smile go back to pets' ancestral wild wolf days, when those animals would "smile" at each other as a sign of submission to show an alpha dog that they were not a threat. Fast forward thousands of years, and domesticated dogs have learned that using this "smile" with their owners gets them good things, like loving pats and yummy treats. So, now they often do it as a way to bond with their owners and show affection โ and humans eat it up!
