Tiny Chihuahua Patrols His Backyard Like He's The New Sheriff In Town
We all know that pets offer companionship, with some people bringing a dog into their home for the added bonus of safety and security. Often, those types of honorary guardians that are seen as the best protective dog breeds include German shepherds, Rottweilers, and Doberman pinschers. But never underestimate the watchful dedication of small dog breeds, like this tiny Chihuahua who eagerly patrols his backyard on TikTok. He totally gets an A for effort!

As the adorable long-haired Chihuahua prances back and forth, he's clearly taking his job of securing the perimeter of the house very seriously. "'Property value went up when I moved in... crime rate mysteriously dropped too,'" reads the caption as the classic country western song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" hilariously plays as the pup acts like he's the new sheriff in town.
"He smells trouble and it ain't happening on his watch!" quipped one jokester in the comments, as another wisecracked, "The work is just never done is it❤️❤️." Meanwhile, plenty of petite-pup owners jumped in to support the little fella, saying there are no better watchdogs in the field than small dogs that weigh under 10 pounds!
Why dogs protect their homes
Usually, most dogs go out of their way to protect the family at some point, whether it be barking out the window or growling at strangers. They do this because of their innate social attachments, where they see the family home as their den and anyone who lives in the house as part of their pack.
Those ancestral survival skills lead them to guard their territory and alert you to danger, whether that be a pesky squirrel running around your yard or an unexpected postal worker delivering a package to the front door. Their acute sense of smell and heightened hearing allow them to detect perceived threats long before their human counterparts do, so, of course, they must put everyone in the house on notice!
All dogs harbor this instinct, so it is to be expected when owning a pup. However, if your pooch constantly barks or exhibits destructive behavior when it comes to protection, he or she may need to see a vet, a qualified dog trainer, or behaviorist to deal with potential anxiety or hypervigilance.
