Simply captioned "my favorite video," the clip shows the fluffy-haired pooch lying in front of a full-length mirror, when suddenly, she sits up and starts barking at her reflection, soon leaping with delight at the entertaining self-realization. Helping push the clip over the emotional edge are intersected lyrics to the sentimental song "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. "The most wholesome thing I could cry," said one commenter at the end, and, yeah, the video will definitely give you the feels!
Why puppies react to mirrors
It's debated whether or not dogs really know they're looking at themselves in the mirror. When puppies first see themselves in a mirror, they may not know that they're looking at their own reflection, instead assuming it's another dog. At first, the reflection might be met with confusion, which manifests as the young pup staring at the glass and/or tilting its head while processing the image. After that, the discovery of the image often results in barking at the mirror, pawing at the glass, and even running around to find the other four-legged friend they think they're looking at.
Over time, puppies will most likely lose interest in their own reflection because it has no unique smell, and dogs rely heavily on scent to decipher the world around them. There being no distinguishable scent tells the dog that there is no threat or presence of another animal, and eventually, they start to ignore their own reflection. So, be sure to enjoy the cute self-discovery stage of puppydom, as it flies by fast!
