Puppy Gets The Most Magical Ending After Being Abandoned At A Baseball Field

The bond between a loyal dog and his human should be unbreakable. That's why Slugger still tried to keep his end of the deal after he was cruelly abandoned on a baseball field. A YouTube video from The Dodo showed rescuers finding the tiny puppy alone, scared, and drenched in rain next to a metal fence. Instead of seeking shelter, he waited for a person who was never coming back. A commenter shared, "That's enough to make a grown man weep."

Slugger was treated for ticks and immediately placed with a foster mom. He was shy and unsure at first, but within days, he gained confidence and a new nickname — The Collector. She found him gathering all the toys and shoes he could find, dragging them to his fluffy pet bed.

When Slugger finally connected with his forever home, The Dodo sent a basket of toys to celebrate his happy ending (baseball-themed, of course). In the video, Slugger entered the room, spotted his new toys piled in a basket on the floor, and rushed gleefully forward. He immediately knew the toys were his and he was ready to play.

Abandonment remains a harsh reality for millions of dogs

According to the ASPCA, 2.8 million dogs entered shelters in 2024, and 60% arrived as strays. These dogs might have grown up on the street or been abandoned outside, like Slugger, and they're still the lucky ones. Many dogs forced to live outside never make it to a shelter or a new home. Unfortunately, it's impossible to estimate the current number of dogs living on the streets.

Staying committed to your own dogs is a big help. Sometimes, it's not possible to continue giving your dog the home they deserve because of illness or other unforeseen circumstances. But that doesn't mean your special bond fails. Instead, you can honor that relationship and give your dog to the Humane Society or another group that will work to find them a safe and joyful home, rather than abandoning them.

You can, however, help abandoned dogs at any stage of their journey. For example, if you discover an abandoned litter of puppies, you can call for help and stay with the pups until someone arrives. If you want to be more active, try volunteering at a shelter or fostering an anxious dog. And if you love seeing pups get their "fairy tail" rescue endings, watch this rescue dog go wild for pizza.
