Baby Skunk's Twitchy Sleep Makes The Internet Fall In Love With It
Skunks are often misunderstood creatures, which sometimes doesn't let them get the credit they deserve for being cute. We're here to show you just how adorable the black-and-white stinkers can be by sharing this X post from the Cincinnati Zoo that shows a precious baby skunk sleeping.

Partially captioned, "Can't get enough of the dreaming baby skunks," the video shows a zoo worker holding a belly-up baby skunk who's so deep in sleep it's on its back that its paws are gently twitching, just like dogs twitch while sleeping. Having a good dream, are we?
The zoo went on to explain that they are raising some young skunks to become future animal ambassadors at zoos to help connect guests with wildlife in a meaningful way. It's already working, if over 50k views are anything to go by, with one commenter saying" Those tiny skunk feeties are crazy adorable." Turns out, skunks aren't just memorable for their smell; they're unforgettable for their sweetness too.
Why do skunks stink?
Skunks have a pretty stinky reputation, but they don't spray just for fun. The biggest skunk spray fact is that their signature smell is actually a defense mechanism they rely on when they feel threatened. They aren't fast runners or strong fighters, so spraying is really their only way to scare off predators and make an escape.
The pungent, oily spray is packed with sulfur compounds called thiols, which create the powerful odor and can irritate the eyes and nose. Even though the black-and-white creatures are famous for their stinky spraying, they avoid doing it whenever possible, saving it for real emergencies, as it takes days for them to fully replenish their supply. So, before resorting to a spray, they'll usually give plenty of warning by stomping their feet, hissing, and raising their tail before letting it blow.
If you spot a skunk, it's best to leave them alone. Just back away slowly and give them space, as they want you to leave just as much as you want them to stay out of your way too. Then, chances are, they'll happily wander off without spraying at all, and everyone can go about their business. Of course, sometimes, dogs don't heed warnings and wind up covered, leaving owners to find a home remedy for skunk spray.
