Squirrel Steals The Show At MLB Game & Announcers' Hilarious Play-By-Play Adds To The Silly Chaos
It's not every day that a squirrel bounds onto a baseball field and upstages the professional athletes, but that's exactly what happened on July 27, 2026, during a Major League Baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers. At first, the squirrel seemed to be searching for a way out of the stadium, which caught the attention of the cameraperson and the announcers, who encouraged the rambunctious rodent to leave through an open door.
But the squirrel hesitated. "He's taking a moment. He's using one of his timeouts," joked one of the announcers. They then proceeded to intersperse play-by-play commentary on the game with moment-by-moment commentary on the squirrel's actions — sprinting around the field, zigzagging, "playing deep infield," receiving a seed from one of the players — cataloging the little guy's every movement for a hilarious 12 minutes.
The grounds crew for the Tigers came onto the field and tried to capture the critter. When the elusive squirrel escaped from a towel, one of the announcers channeled the animal's thoughts, crowing triumphantly, "No, I won't be hemmed in. I have freedom on my mind." Eventually, after several tries, the bumbling humans succeeded in nabbing the wily creature, and the crowd was vocal in their displeasure. "The loud boo you just heard was for the Keystone Cops routine of 20-odd members of the Tigers' grounds crew," one of the announcers said. "But we are told that in the eighth inning all those grounds crew members will screw in a light bulb."
Rooting for Team Squirrel
Viewers couldn't get enough of the fluffy-tailed interloper. "Little guy hustles more than the fielders," wrote one person, to which another responded, "Hahaha No kidding. Pay the squirrel a few mil and let him run the bases. 😂" One netizen noted, "Stopped being a baseball game and became a nature documentary," and another observed, "Getting flung from a glove, ducking 3 towel throws, getting caught and escaping again is a total power move. Legitimately nobody can match the tenacity of that squirrel." A few commenters compared the squirrel to Jimothy, the viral "mutant" raccoon taking Seattle by storm (who's also one of the six internet-viral animals that have captured our hearts so far in 2026), with one person dishing up this cheeky observation: "Heads up Jimothy...you've got competition."
Several netizens wondered about the eventual fate of the sassy squirrel. Near the end of the video, one of the announcers mentioned that he spoke to the member of the grounds crew who managed to ultimately catch the animal. "As soon as they got past the fence, the squirrel escaped again," the announcer revealed. "But according to him, they have it under control." Hmmm. Sounds to us like the score might still be Team Squirrel one, Team Humans zero.
