We've all seen pet obstacle courses and challenges on social media, where some pets excel and others...not so much. However, this one put a German shepherd's perceived fearlessness to the test on TikTok — and you've got to see it to believe it!

Everyone thinks German Shepherds are fearless. So I put Potato to the test. 👀😂

In the challenge, the GSD named Potato is coaxed out of a room by the offer of a treat on the other side of an obstacle. First comes sticky paper, which the dog doesn't even think twice about walking over to get to the tasty treat. Next comes bubble wrap — and some hesitation, but savory snack procurement finally wins. Then it's aluminum foil, which is thought to keep pets off furniture and indeed gives the dog some serious pause before hustling over for a nibble. Finally, the "final boss," a stuffed replica of a German shepherd staring straight back at Potato. But even that was no match for this brave pooch. In the end, it was determined "Threat level: 0%" and obstacle course complete!

"That dog is visibly tired of your shenanigans," one person ran to the comments to point out. Meanwhile, others piped in with things like, "No obstacles exist for a treat haha" and "such a brave baby 🥰." Turns out, no challenge is scarier than missing out on a snack!

Why German shepherds are considered fearless

As a breed, German shepherds have a reputation for being fearless, and there's a good reason they often seem brave when facing a challenge. The breed was developed to be a confident, capable working dog, so staying composed in unfamiliar or stressful situations is part of what makes them who they are. They're naturally alert and tend to take notice when something seems off, rather than immediately running for cover.

In fact, German shepherds are incredibly loyal to their people and are often quick to investigate anything they perceive as a potential threat. Add in their high intelligence and ability to assess situations quickly, and you have a dog that can appear remarkably brave and one of the most obedient dog breeds ever. That doesn't mean they never feel fear, though. Even the boldest German shepherd can become startled, nervous, or scared, especially when they have just been raised as household pets.

Still, their long history as working dogs has only strengthened the German shepherd's "fearless" reputation, continuing to be used for guarding, police and military K-9s, and other jobs where confidence and focus are key. Basically, that stereotyped attitude is a combination of genetics and training, but their capacity for bravery depends on each dog as an individual. No matter their level of bravery, though, they should all be treated with kindness and respect.
