It's heartbreaking to know how much suffering dogs and cats can go through when in the wrong hands or in the wrong situation. Sometimes, those stories have to be shared so people are reminded of what animals endure and how they can be helped. The story of this dog named Machete may be hard to watch at first, but it's important to share this video by The Dodo about a badly injured rescue dog who continues to love humans, despite all he's been through.

Machete was found covered in blood after suffering severe wounds, but even in obvious pain, he refused to leave his injured canine friend behind. Rescued by a good Samaritan, he quickly showed nothing but trust and affection toward the humans caring for him. After surgery and months of recovery, Machete and his friend both healed and were ready for adoption out of Baja, California, through an organization named Los Adoptables.

"I'm in tears," wrote one viewer, adding that they were "unable to understand why any 'human' would torment and abuse any of the creatures we are blessed to share the Earth with us." Another added, "I lost faith in humanity seeing his back, but you restored it by saving him." There's nothing more to say except thank you to the kind, determined people who helped save these two helpless creatures and helped them find forever homes.

How to help dogs trust again after abuse

Helping an abused dog learn to trust again starts with one simple rule: let the dog set the pace. Some dogs like Machete are still naturally loving even after enduring the most heartless cruelty imaginable, while others need a lot of time, space, and coaxing to come back out of their shell.

For those dogs in particular, provide a quiet place they can retreat to without being bothered, and keep daily routines as predictable as possible. Regular mealtimes, walks, and sleep can help a frightened dog understand that life is becoming safe and predictable again. When interacting, resist the urge to rush things, never forcing any type of physical contact, including petting. Instead, sit nearby without staring, tossing tasty treats in the dog's direction and allowing it to decide whether it wants to come closer.

Most importantly, never use punishment or intimidation, as you want to help create good associations with people. Progress may be slow, and that's perfectly normal. However, if a dog doesn't seem to be turning a corner after considerable time while using these tested tactics, it may be time to consult a specialized veterinarian or qualified behavior specialist who can provide additional support when fear or aggression makes rebuilding trust challenging. Because no matter what, every dog deserves a chance at a cruelty-free life again, from Machete to this goldendoodle who also set out on a healing journey after a tragic life, and this foster beagle who was once full of fear.
