How common are gold eyes in cats?
While most people may think of cats as mainly having green eyes, gold, yellow, and orange eyes are actually the most common eye colors in cats, with a large majority having them. Green eyes — which are often shown when depicting cats in pictures or paintings — are much more rare. The least common eye color for kitties is blue, followed by the ultra-rare odd-colored or mixed colored eyes (like one blue and one green).
So, while they still look stunning, gold-colored eyes in cats are actually quite common. Any type of cat can have them, but they are most frequently found and associated with breeds like the American shorthair, Bengal, and Maine coon. (See: this rare Bengal-Maine coon mix showing off its golden eyes.) It all comes down to the iris having a certain concentration of melanin, or pigment-producing cells. So, the next time you draw or paint a cat, make sure to color the eyes gold instead of green if you want them to blend in!
