Costco's Automatic Litter Box Sounds Like A Cat Owner's Dream - But Pet Parents Have Concerns

If you share your home with cats, scooping litter is part of your daily routine, although few pet parents would call it fun. That's probably why self-cleaning automatic litter boxes have taken off in recent years, seeming like a dream come true: less odor, less mess, less scooping. However, on social media, some cat owners are raising concerns after the PetSafe ScoopFree OpenSky Self-Cleaning Litter Box at Costco made waves on Instagram, questioning its safety, reliability, and whether the high-tech gadget is really worth the price.

In the video, the content creator calls finding the automatic litter box at Costco a "game changer," as you'd never have to scoop litter again. Theoretically, the device cleans itself after your cat uses it, and even connects to an app so you can keep tabs on usage from your phone. Costco's bundle also comes with some crucial litter box accessories, making it a tempting upgrade for busy pet parents. However, people quickly ran to the comments of the clip to share their concerns about the product.

Some pet parents pointed to reports of self-cleaning litter boxes malfunctioning and putting unsuspecting kitties at risk, with one person stating, "No thank you. Can't trust them." Meanwhile, others said older cats could struggle to climb into the elevated design and that many four-legged friends resist switching to a new litter box setup. Several simply felt the nearly $400 price tag was too steep: "I'd rather just scoop for that price lol."

Here's how often you should clean the litter box

With cats in the house, keeping the litter box clean seems like a never-ending job. Luckily, it really only takes a few minutes of daily maintenance to make a difference — even if you don't have an automatic box. Scooping out waste once or twice a day — morning and night — will help keep odors and mess under control, making the box a place your cat actually wants to use, as most cats have high cleanliness standards. If you have more than one kitty, the golden rule is to keep one litter box per cat, plus an extra, to help keep your cats happy.

How often you'll need to completely change the litter depends on what kind you're using. Clumping litter can usually go two weeks before needing a full swap, while non-clumping varieties require more frequent refreshes. Even self-cleaning litter boxes aren't totally hands-off and still need their waste compartments emptied and the unit cleaned on a regular basis.

When it's time for a deep clean of the box itself, warm water and gentle, unscented soap should do the trick. Just remember: A clean litter box doesn't just make life more pleasant for you, it also helps keep your feline friend comfortable, healthy, and coming back to the right spot every time.
