Mysterious Matchmaker Arranges The Cat Wedding Of The Season
It's not every day that you get invited to a wedding for cats. Even more unusual is when you learn that one of the two felines being joined in matrimony is your own.
But that was the curious situation Ashley Shields, an Iowa woman and mother of four, found herself in.
Even more curious were the refreshments the save-the-date flyer promised: "There will be tuna cake." The dress code was equally puzzling: "If you do come, you do not have to dress up nicely, but you can if you want."
The author of the hand-written note: her 11-year-old neighbor, a boy named Brady.
According to The Dodo, the budding matchmaker had noticed his family's cat, Silver, repeatedly cozying up to Pedro, who lives next door with the Shields clan.
It was time, he decided, for the smitten kittens to take their relationship to the next level.
"He'd seen them hang out a lot, and he was like, 'I'm not really sure what they're doing, but I felt that since they hang out so much, it was probably time they get married,'" a relative had to say of the boy's Cupid-like machinations.
Moved by the sheer earnestness of it all, Shields, her daughters, and family friends lent their efforts to the nuptials by clearing space for a ceremony, prepping accessories for the bride and groom (a veil and bowtie, respectively), and baking the aforementioned tuna cake.
Later that week, an audience of 30 well-wishers gathered in Shields' dining room for the mouser merger.
While Silver seemed to relish the pomp and circumstance, Pedro was a measure less enthusiastic: "We had to kind of to give them their tuna cakes early so they would stay in place for the vows and the ceremony was officiated." (TYPICAL MAN BEHAVIOR, AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT?)
In a welcome stroke of serendipity, Shields was already authorized to wed couples in the state so she stepped in to officiate Silver and Pedro's union. After a brief recap of the duo's courtship, "me-vows" were exchanged and the deed was officially done.
From there, the ceremony followed the typical wedding script: Champagne was served, while the new couple mingled with the guests.
Will the pair's love stand the test of time? That's to be determined, but at least one attendee thinks the sparks will continue to fly:
"Whether or not they stay married, they do seem rather crazy for each other considering the time they spend together ... I think cat friendship lasts forever."
